OUR WORLD IRISH AID AWARDS 2019

We have been becoming much more aware of issues concerning people around the world this year in 4th Class. We have found out about the 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development agreed by the United Nations in 2015. We talked about what all these mean and we illustrated them but we looked more closely at some –

  • No poverty
  • Quality Education
  • Affordable and Clean Energy
  • Decent work and economic growth
  • Sustainable cities and communities
  • Responsible consumption and production
  • Life on land

We used the quote from Maya Angelou as the basis of our work – “Be a rainbow in somebody else’s cloud”. We loved the idea of how we could brighten up somebody else’s life by changing our actions for the better of everyone in the world.

Our work at studying the Global Goals crossed many areas of the curriculum and linked to other projects and work we did.

GREEN FLAG: As part of our Green Flag work this year we are working towards Global Citizenship Energy; we have been trying to find ways of reducing our energy use, not just for our own benefit but also to benefit people in other parts of the world also.

FAIR TRADE: We have found all about Fair Trade and what we can do to ensure farmers get a fair price for their products. We got help form GOAL when Maura came in and did a workshop on this. We also went to visit a Fair Trade coffee farmer from Colombia.

SEAI WORKSHOP: We enjoyed a really interesting workshop on energy and sustainability. We learned so much about forms of energy and ways we can reduce our energy use and how this can improve the lives of others.

RELIGION: We have been learning that our actions can seriously impact the lives of other people too. We have been talking about Pope Francis’ letter Laudato Si and we see that he is trying to encourage us to be mindful of others around us and the care we take of our world.

Our work crossed many areas of the curriculum; this is a summary of different areas of the curriculum we covered when doing work on the Our World Irish Aid Awards -

LINKS TO THE CURRICULUM –

ENGLISH: Oral language; reading; writing;

GEOGRAPHY: Human Environments; Environmental awareness and care;

HISTORY: Continuity and change over time; conflict and society; story

SCIENCE: Environmental awareness and care; energy

S.P.H.E.: Myself and others; myself and the wider world.

VISUAL ARTS: drawing; painting; collage; responding to art;

MUSIC: Listening to and responding to music; Song singing

DRAMA: Role-play; character analysis

To ensure we got our message out to other people we had a noticeboard outside our classroom so the other classes could also learn about the Global Goals. We also did homework where we had to bring home the message about what we all can do to help the environment and other people.

We have really enjoyed doing all the work for this project. It is made up of small pieces of work crossing the different areas of the curriculum. We especially enjoyed learning about Irish Aid’s Partner countries and presenting our projects on these, doing the butterfly collage for the whole school and writing postcards to our 11-year-old self.

We have put together some pictures of our work in a PowerPoint presentation using the music we incorporated into the theme: “Be a rainbow in somebody else’s cloud”. Most of us knew very little about the Global Goals but now we know so much more and we have brought this message home too so other adults have heard about them.

We hope our PowerPoint gives you a little idea of the work we covered. We have gained so much from it and we hope we will have helped the world become a friendlier place where no one is left behind.
